Understand and decide

What matters before whitening

Why teeth may look darker despite good care

Natural tooth colour is strongly influenced by the dentine beneath the enamel. Pigments from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco can also build up over time. Ageing, medication, trauma or a root-treated single tooth may change appearance as well. A responsible whitening plan therefore begins by identifying the cause rather than simply applying a gel.

Dental cleaning or whitening?

A professional dental cleaning removes calculus, plaque and surface staining. It may reveal the natural tooth colour more clearly but does not change it. Whitening acts on colour pigments within natural teeth. The appropriate next step often becomes clear only after cleaning and a documented shade assessment.

Important: crowns, fillings and veneers do not become lighter through whitening.

The suitability check protects teeth and gums

Before whitening, we assess teeth and gums, leaking restorations, decay, cracks, sensitive necks and visible dental work. With increased sensitivity, the method may need to be adjusted or whitening may not be advisable. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and known allergies to ingredients must also be discussed.

How to maintain a balanced result

How quickly teeth darken again depends on diet, beverages, smoking, oral hygiene and individual tooth structure. Strongly staining or acidic foods and drinks are best limited initially. Regular checks and effective home care help maintain perspective and allow any future top-up to be planned safely.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Whiten teeth · Berlin

Clear answers to support your decision. Individual suitability is assessed at your appointment.

Is professional dental cleaning the same as whitening?
No. Cleaning removes plaque and external staining. Whitening lightens colour pigments within natural teeth. Cleaning beforehand is often useful so the starting shade and result can be assessed more evenly.
Do fillings, crowns or veneers become lighter with whitening?
No. Restorative materials do not change colour through whitening. Visible restorations must therefore be considered when selecting a target shade and planning any later aesthetic treatment.
Can I whiten my teeth if they are sensitive?
This requires an individual assessment. Sensitive necks or already sensitive teeth may react more strongly for a period after whitening. Depending on the findings, the method may be adjusted or an alternative recommended.
How long does a whitening result remain visible?
It varies. Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, diet and oral hygiene influence darkening. No fixed duration can be guaranteed; top-ups are planned when needed after a dental check.
Why should I ask a dental practice before using an over-the-counter whitening kit?
Decay, cracks or leaking restorations are not always visible. Gel may irritate teeth or gums in these areas. An examination determines whether whitening is appropriate and which method fits the starting situation.
