What is CEREC Dental Restoration?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics – and describes a fully digital system for producing ceramic restorations directly at the treatment chair. Your tooth is first precisely measured with a modern 3D intraoral scanner – without unpleasant impression material, quickly and comfortably. The scan data is then used to design a tailor-made restoration using specialist software. Our in-house milling machine then mills the finished restoration from a high-quality ceramic block – from feldspathic ceramic or zirconia, depending on the clinical situation. The entire process typically takes 1 to 2 hours. You leave the practice with your finished, fitted dental restoration.
Which treatments are suitable for CEREC?
CEREC is versatile and excellent for inlays and onlays as a high-quality replacement for conventional amalgam or composite fillings, for partial and full crowns on heavily damaged teeth, for veneers to aesthetically correct discolouration, shape deviations or small gaps, and for definitive restorations after root canal treatment. The CEREC procedure is not suitable for bridges spanning multiple teeth or implant-supported restorations – for these we work closely with our specialised dental laboratory.
CEREC vs. conventional dental restoration – an honest comparison
Conventional dental restoration requires at least two appointments: at the first, an impression is taken and a temporary crown is placed, which you wear for one to two weeks while the laboratory produces the restoration. At the second appointment, the temporary is removed and the final restoration is placed. With CEREC, the temporary crown is completely eliminated – along with the risk of it coming loose or breaking. The digital precision of the 3D scan ensures an exact, well-fitting restoration. The ceramic used is biocompatible, tooth-coloured, durable and extremely natural-looking. Many of our patients report that they can barely distinguish their CEREC crown from their natural tooth.
Material quality – ceramics at the highest level
We exclusively use high-quality ceramic blocks from leading manufacturers. Feldspathic ceramic offers exceptional aesthetics and light transmission that closely resembles the natural tooth – ideal for visible front teeth and veneers. Zirconia is known for its outstanding strength and is particularly suitable for heavily loaded posterior teeth. Both materials are metal-free and therefore ideal for patients with metal allergies or the desire for a purely ceramic restoration.
Our in-house CEREC laboratory – Apparategemeinschaft Spring/Brauns
What makes our CEREC restorations special: through Apparategemeinschaft Spring/Brauns, we have an in-house partner laboratory exclusively specialised in CEREC inlays, partial crowns and crowns in high-quality ceramic and full zirconia. Through direct collaboration within the practice, corrections are possible immediately – maximum precision without detours.
The process in one appointment: preparation of the tooth → digital scanning with the 3D intraoral scanner → design of the restoration on the computer → milling from the ceramic block in the CEREC unit → firing and finishing → direct placement and occlusal adjustment. The entire treatment typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. No temporary restoration, no interim appointment, no waiting – and the result is immediately fully load-bearing. For our patients, this means maximum comfort and minimum effort.
Costs and insurance coverage
Statutory health insurance covers a fixed subsidy for dental restorations, the amount of which depends on the type of restoration and your bonus booklet. We always provide a transparent treatment and cost plan before treatment so you know exactly what costs to expect – without surprises. Private patients are billed according to GOZ. We are happy to advise you in a personal consultation about all options.
