What is a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (endodontics) is necessary when the interior of the tooth – the so-called pulp with its nerves and blood vessels – is inflamed or has died due to deep decay, cracks or trauma. Without treatment, the inflammation can spread to the jawbone and lead to serious complications. During treatment, the infected tissue is carefully removed from the root canal, the canal is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with special instruments and irrigation solutions, and then permanently sealed. The goal is always to preserve your natural tooth – because no dental restoration matches the quality of your own tooth.

Why microscopic endodontics?

The surgical microscope allows up to 25x magnification of the treatment field. This enables us to identify and treat structures that are simply invisible to the naked eye: fine lateral canals, hairline cracks, instruments retained from previous treatments, or incompletely prepared canal sections. This precise view significantly increases the success rate of treatment, while simultaneously preserving healthy tooth structure and enabling a gentler treatment experience for you as a patient. Conventional endodontics without a microscope is no longer considered state-of-the-art in modern dentistry.

Revision – When a previous treatment did not achieve the desired outcome

Not every root canal treatment is successful on the first attempt – sometimes discomfort persists or returns after some time. In such cases, we offer endodontic revision treatment. Under the surgical microscope, we can specifically address complex situations following earlier external treatments: retained instruments, perforations, over- or under-filled canals, as well as canals that were missed during the initial treatment. Many teeth recommended for extraction can be preserved through careful revision – and that is our goal.

Is root canal treatment painful?

We hear this question often – and the answer is clear: No. With modern local anaesthesia, the treatment is largely pain-free. Many of our patients report afterwards that the procedure was significantly more comfortable than feared. We take time for you, explain every step and work at your pace. After treatment, there may be mild pressure sensitivity for a few days – this is normal and subsides quickly.

Treatment process – step by step

First, we take a digital X-ray to precisely assess the number and course of the root canals. After anaesthesia, the tooth is isolated with a rubber dam (protective sheet) so that treatment takes place under sterile conditions. Under the microscope, the canals are prepared with mechanical files and thoroughly disinfected with special irrigation solutions – including sodium hypochlorite and EDTA. Finally, the canals are permanently sealed with gutta-percha and a sealer. In most cases, treatment is completed in one to two appointments.
